A brief history of Olympic Studios

The 1960s

The Rolling Stones were among the first rock bands to record in the new Olympic Studios. In 1966 they recorded tracks for their album Between The Buttons and continued to record their next 6 consecutive albums year on year until 1972: Their Satanic Majesties Request (67), Beggars Banquet (68), Let It Bleed (69), Goats Head Soup (70), Sticky Fingers (71), Exile On Main Street (72).

Equally prolific were Led Zeppelin who recorded their debut album I in 1968, and subsequent album tracks for II, III, IV, Houses Of The Holy, and Physical Graffiti until 1975. The Beatles recorded ‘Baby You’re a Rich Man’ and ‘ All You Need Is Love’ with George Martin in 1967.

Perhaps one of the most definitive albums of the 60s was Jimi Hendrix' debut Are You Experienced? It was a fusion of rock blues, pop and soul, a landmark production from the eclectic rock guitarist. Hendrix recorded tracks for his follow up, Electric Ladyland, at Olympic and in the US. This album was even greater, pushing the boundaries of studio technology and establishing Hendrix as perhaps the most inspirational rock musician of that era.

The Studios also housed film and TV work recording numerous episodes of the cult TV series Joe 90.
